2019 Best Summer Movies to Watch

The Talking Through The Medias team has been invited to screen and review the following upcoming films. These are the film line ups we are excited about because they are originals and franchises that seem like they will pack a punch. Here is my break down of each one and why I think you'll want to join us in the theaters.

As the summer months approach and schools’ prep to let out their students for summer break, theaters are bound to be filled with countless comedies, thrillers and dramas to escape the raging sun for some much-needed cool air shelter. From teens trying to escape a dream-scenario turned nightmare in MA with Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, to a spin-off of the wildly popular series X-men with its most beloved character DARK PHOENIX, to comedy icon Kevin Heart returning to the big screen in a small package as Snowball for THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 to an audience favorite duo fighting it out on stage in FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW and a Hispanic film of a turbulent relationship that will make you non-stop laugh with LAS PILDORAS DE MI NOVIO these summer film’s cover all genres that are sure to have something for all the ages to enjoy!
MA (May 31)
Developed by the executive producer of cinematic hit Get Out, the film stars Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer), a loner, who one day is asked by a teenager to buy some booze for her and her friends. She offers the kids her basement for them to drink, but MA’s hospitality soon starts to turn into obsession, and now these teenagers must find a way to escape the terrorizing ways of MA.

My Thoughts: Octavia Spencer, this award winning phenom has not let me down yet. Her acting style and presents is warm and inviting, strong and illuminating. Now take all of that charisma and put it in to a world of horror and madness. I have the feeling that this movie will have me speculating and have all of my expectations pleasantly and shockingly shattered. I'm looking forward to this screening because I trust the star and the

Dark Phoenix (June 7)

Official Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram YouTube | #DarkPhoenix

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved character as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. Wrestling with an increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean Grey spiraling out of control threaten the fabric of just not the X-Men but of our planet. The family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet – one of their own.

My thoughts: This may be the one I'm most excited about. How will the Fox version of the X-Men conclude now that the property is back home with Marvel Studios? We may not be getting a film with the X-Men for five years according to the Disney executives but the end of an era is putting it mildly. I hope it delivers and can not wait till my crew and I are gobbling up more popcorn and getting our mutation on. This has been about 20 years in the making since the original X-Men film. Yes it has come to a new team but remember we're still in the same universe as the original.

Abominable (September 27)
Official Website | #Abominable
This film will transport the audiences on an epic 2,000-mile adventure from the streets of Shanghai to the breathtaking Himalayan snowscapes. When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, that starts an epic adventure with her mischievous friends, Jin and Peng, to help the magical creature “Everest” before zoologist Dr. Zara captures the Yeti and takes it far away from its family.

My thoughts: Just like you, I was thinking "what is this" don't worry, its Dreamworks. We should be in great hands. Lets take the family out and see what Chloe Bennet and Sarah Paulson, two of my favorite actors of the small screen have to show us.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (June 7)
Official Website Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | #SLOP2
This is the highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s comedic blockbuster that had the biggest opening weekend of any original film. Starring Kevin Heart as Snowball, Tiffany Haddish as Daisy and Harrison Ford as Rooster, these pets are up against obstacles that will determine their courage. The film explores the emotional lives of our pets, the deep bond between them and the families that love them, and answers the question that has long intrigued every pet owner: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?

My Thoughts: Okay, Now I'm ready. I feel that this time around we're really going to stick the landing and see exactly what our pets do when we're not at home. Maybe they'll save the city again from an army of upset animals but I'm thinking we're going to stay grounded and just keep the story domesticated and have more of a wholesome fun time as the secret is finally revealed.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (August 2)
Official Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | #HobbsandShaw
The Fast & Furious franchise is back, now featuring its first stand-alone vehicle, with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw that must team up to defeat cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) as he gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever. These two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be worse than themselves.

My Thoughts: Dude, you had me at The Rock and Jason. There's no way that this movie shouldn't be a contender for the billion dollar club. Its coming from a powerhouse of a franchise and has franchise viagre staring in it. It looks funny and finally features superpowers in the Fast and Furious universe. Shut up and take my money!!!

Las Pildoras de mi Novio (August 30)

The film stars “Jane the Virgin’s” Jaime Camil as Hank, a charismatic store owner with a big secret: he takes several amounts of assortment prescription drugs for his multiple personality disorder. His new girlfriend, unaware of this information, invites him to an island resort for a business retreat. After Hank discovers he forgot his medication, things go from calm to chaotic as he becomes unable to control his symptoms – something his relationship might not be able to sustain.

Movie News: Minions Number One In Box office

As I predicted and still couldn't imaging that much of an intake. $400 Million worldwide.

Jurassic World in second place and Disney/Pixar holding strong in third.

It takes a giant minion to knock out the attack of Prat. Don't feel bad Disney, Inside was better.

By a mile.

The Movie News: Amanda Peterson Dies at 43

Can't Buy Me Love Actress, Amanda Peterson, dies at 43.

I'm saddened to report that actress Amanda Peterson, best known for portraying the love interest of Patrick Dempsey in 1987’s Can’t Buy Me Love, died over the 4th of July weekend in her Colorado home
She was 43 years old, and has two children. She was discovered on the 5th of July just three days away from her 44th birthday. I wast first introduced to this actress in 1985 when I saw her movie Explorers. She played Lori Swenson, the love interest to a young Ethan Hawke, in this syfy cult classic. I swill watch this movie from time to time. I was then reacquainted to her in the movie Can't Buy Me Love. I've always had a hing of a crush on this beautiful actress.
The’ cause of death is unknown at this time, though Peterson’s father confirms his daughter suffered from “some illness,” along with sleep apnea.
Her last role was in a film called Windrunner in 1994. She then retired from the entertainment world.
I know I'll be watching my two favorite films

Mad Max was Awesomely Overrated!

Maybe its because everyone said its so great. I can't be told that.

You build up my expectations and I'm going to always think it could have been better. In this case, no, it was the perfect blend of action and suspense. The practical effects were great
and it was a wild ride but seeing as everyone was going on and on I can only start from the top and begin to chip away at the perfect grade once I see something I don't like.

For starters, stop saying this is a Furiosa's movie. Mad Max was the hero helping out his fellow co and supporting actors. But this was very much a Mad Max movie.

Well, that's all I got. The only complaint. The viewers complaining about whether or not this was really a Mad Max movie. I say, who cares. This was an action packed thrill ride. Just watch it, and be entertained. Was it the best movie in the world? No. But it fires on all cylinders and has a guitar with flames.

Yep! One of the best ever.

Oh yeah, if Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy aren't getting along, its not a problem, its obvious that George Miller is handing off the franchise to a Furiosa. This would be great for female leads. Charlize Theron is proven to be box office gold. It would be great for Hollywood to bank on her. I could live with this being the last Mad Max but since we're getting a sequel I'd love it if Tom Hardy would stop channeling Bane in every other movie. Or is that just his voice?

Did Fox & Marvel Master Mind How Quick Silver and Scarlet Which Would Be Used?

After Processing The Age Of Ultron . . .

I'd have to say that it was an amazing movie. Once again, Josh Weadon was able to bring a comic book to life. To me this was the most action packed comic book movie ever created. I'd still give Captain America: Winter Soldier the edge victory on how well the action and story balanced but this by far was a bigger movie. People are asking if I beleive it to be better than the first Avengers and its a hard question to answer. The Avengers was a first in its kind. A movie going experience after years of careful master minding. The Age of Ultron was its sequel that built upon that foundation.

Over all, the storylines were both excellent and intertaining. Both have their weaknesses, for example, the ending of Avengers (spoiler alert) when the big boss was defeated all the other aliens bit the dust. That's been done to death and it made no sense in a movie with this much on the line. You might as well called that the two meter wide week spot on th Death Star. I mean seriously, plug that damn hole up before Luke comes to use the force on you and blows up your hard work.

Ultron's weakness was the under usage of key characters that they used so well in the first movie to make up for failing other characters in the second movie. Hulk never really had that "Puny God" moment like he had with Loki in the first Avengers. He could have been a key factor in the fight against Ultron and when you finally had that moment, though funny, you got a off camera scene with the Hulk going after Ultron and Ultron giving another funny line. The scene worked for me but I felt that Hulk could have caused more problems to Ultron than the Avengers were willing to allow.

This may have all been done to make up for the lack of Hawkeye and Black Widow. These two characters were given a lot more dept and that was great but a lot of that dept could have been given to Ultron whom we just had to accept was completed and corrupted in a blink of an eye, then boom, here's your villian. I wish there were more history to Ultrons programming. Did Hank Pimm help Tony's dad with the concept of an Ultron project. If that's the case, I hope we learn that in Antman but I'd love it if we got a quick little soundbite where Tony would have at least said Pimm's name to give the credit of Ultrons design the man comic book readers know made Ultron originally.

This could have been great chance to give a nod to the next movie in line. They did it in Winter soldier for Dr. Strange. I saw no harm in it for Antman.

That's mostly how I came away from the movie. Ultimately it was amazing. I will be seeing it again in IMAX. That's a must. I have to give it a 8.5 out of 10. This movie fired on all cylinders and we finally got another awesome villain so the berdain doesn't stay all on Loki's sholdiers. Let hope Ultron and Loki team up one day.

In closing, the Vision was well exicuted character. The way we came to totally trust him as a team member was like a sniper shot that hit the target from record distance. Great writting and extremly suttle. Bravo. This leads me to how I originally felt about the transition to the new team from the old. I was against it at first. I know it will be alot of growing pains seeing some of the original roster leave to inevitably being recast. After seeing how well Scarlet Witch and Quick Sivler gelled with the team and having Vision bring a new element to the equation that felt so natural, I now have great expectations for the upcoming films.

I do have a theory. Some know that Marvel Studios and Fox have a shared contract for the Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch characters. (spoiler alert!!!!) Since Quicksilver was only used in X-Men Day's of Future Past, Scarlet being a little girl. This, I beleive because of Sivler's powers made him age a bit faster, hince the immaturity. Marvel used both characters but killed off QuickSilver. Could Fox and Marvel come to an agreement that one company would mainly use Scarlet and the other company uses Silver? This is what I beleive the deal will be for the most part but each company can use the characters as many times as they want. Especially if they become more popular.  Money always talks.

I'd love to get your thoughts on the movie as well.

Man of Steel: The Begining of Something Epic

Man of Steel: The Begining of Something Epic

The beginning of something epic. The Man of Steel movie looks like it will go down in history as the most profitable and beloved Superman movie ever. Everything that I've seen as far as advertisements, trailers, behind the scenes footage and the movie itself, tells us this. Fans like me are all raving about it. Warner Bros. have conducted themselves with a pitch perfect market of this movie, not giving away too much and blowing our minds with what we've been allowed to witness. When I say that this is the beginning of something epic of course I'm referring to this leading to a Justice League movie.

WB are now talking about just pushing forth with a Justice League movie with the team all together without explanation unlike what Marvel did with the Avengers. This is a gamble because we've seen the Avengers work so well. There are too many variables in this situation. 1. What do we do with the Green Lantern? Do we include Ryan Reynolds, reboot with a new lantern to pay Hal or let John Stewart take over? If you listen to the great John Campea (@JohnCampea) there is only one Green Lantern and that is Hal Jordon. The problem with this statement is that it is so far from the truth. Hal Jordon is apart of a Corp and he's wasn't the first human green lantern, he's the most popular.

The amazing thing about the Justice League cartoons is that it allowed John Stewart to rival his likability in the group. I won't just play the race card and point out the obvious that justice league is lacking diversity (too late). But if we were to get a second chance at a Green Lantern I say move forward with Green Lantern II introducing John Steward to replace Hal and give Ryan Remolds a promotion to a new section. WB should also turn off the green glowing CG suits and make them more like the comic book if they are to fit with Superman worlds.

Hal Jordan had his movie and it totally sucked. John Stewart may be better, it may be worse but at least we'd know which one to go with for the Justice League. My money would be on the brother. His story is more interesting. Stewarts attitude fits perfect with Nolans  Dark Knight and Snyder's Man of Steel. That's just my opinion. If I'm wrong about John then lets go with Hal and keep it moving.

This brings us to the elephant in the room. Wonder Woman, I don't care what anyone says. You can't not talk about Wonder Woman's back story. Women have a hard time as it is getting there own major action movies. People know, for the most part, the back stories of the guys but your average movie goer doesn't know squat about Wonder Woman. If they're not going to make a movie for her then her joining the group last and going into her back story at least a little bit makes total sense. You can have the major war that the Justice League is fighting already in progress and have a U.S. fighter pilot crash on Themyscira and bring her to the team then.

Who could play her? For a while Meagan Fox was the one people wanted. Then she messed up her chances by going into really bad movies and being really bad in them. A few people are now talking Cobie Smulders since her performance on Avengers.

I throwing it out there, Olivia Wilde should be considered. She's got the looks, height, and acting ability. I'd love it.

Doing Justice League correctly is a very delicate thing. Marvel fans are waiting to compare and contrast and make claims that DC is destined to mess it up. But I feel like all they need is the right direction and everything else will come together perfectly.

Let Justice be served

I Love Ben Affleck as Batman and You Do Too . . .

Two words, Heath Ledger. You, your brother, your next door neighbor and your grandmother hated the idea of the guy from Broke Back Mountain playing the most famous comic book villain ever to hit the big screen. Till the Dark Knight premiered then everyone felt that he was the greatest joker who ever donned the makeup.

Casting directors are there for a reason, they are seeing a bigger picture we will never be aware of till the genius is seen on screen. Batman is a billion dollar franchise, WB will not make a decision like this likely knowing they have a lot on the line if it fails. Snyder, Nolan and Warner must all be in agreement if this choice happened so quickly and just like how most people thought Heath would ripping the franchise because we didn't see the chemistry that the director/casting team saw made most if us all turn hypocrite when the movie came out.

Keep calm and reserve first judgment when the trailer drops. For those of you who doubt Affleck's ability to do a descent job I say this, The Town, Argo, & Dare Devil. The Town showed us his dark side, Argo showed us a man who can figure out how to get the job done through impossible odds (something Bruce/Bats does consistently) and Dare Devil wore a costume.

All jokes aside, I liked dare devil, it was a great movie besides that seesaw scene and the fight scenes were better than anything from the Batman movies.
Having Affleck as Batman gives the current director some breathing room. Ben is not the greatest actor ever but he's better than most and better than he was when he was just Kevin Smith pretty boy go to guy. Ben is now an Oscar winning director and by better director than Snyder. The proofs in the awards, so Snyder has the expertise and vision that his new Bat can assist with.

So lets just see what happens because the majority of you none believers, doubters, haters and hard core butt hurt fans are going to remember how wrong you were about Ledger and see it 10 times anyways. Jennifer Lopez will not be Catwoman so I think we're going to be fine my fellow Frantics.
