Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix

As Netflix continues to resurrect 80's classics we as the babies from that decade are getting another treat. Voltron is back. I can't wait to see what we're in store for in this blueprint of The Power Rangers.

I was a huge Transformers, Thundercats and G.I. Joe fan. Voltron was definitely on the list of must sees as a kid. I can't wait to relive the adventure.

Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil aren’t the only Defenders on Netflix; the streaming service has also rebooted classic 1980s cartoon Voltron: Defender of the Universe as a new animated adventure series called Voltron: Legendary Defender. Featuring a similar premise to the better-known Power Rangers franchise (right down to the original series using footage from a Japanese TV show), Voltron is about a group of astronauts who discover five lion-shaped mechs that come together to form one giant mech called Voltron.

Featuring the voices of Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow), Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time), Tyler Labine (Reaper) and Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) as its five intrepid pilots, the series was produced by DreamWorks Animation and World Events Productions, and animated by Studio Mir (The Legend of Korra). Now a brand new trailer has arrived to start the hype train rolling for Voltron: Legendary Defender‘s release on June 10th.

The first teaser trailer for Voltron: Legendary Defender arrived earlier this year, but it simply showed the five mechs coming together to form Voltron, whereas this latest look at the show spends more time with the human pilots. It looks like the show will feature a healthy blend of comedy and action, and although kids are the primary audience it’s easy to imagine adults getting into this show as well. With any luck, it will be a worthy addition to Netflix’s growing slate of original programming.

Speaking in an interview with EW, co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One) admits that the original Voltron: Defenders of the Universe series hasn’t aged particularly well. “We wanted to make [Legendary Defender] closer to what we remember the show being versus what it actually ends up being when you go back and watch it,” she explained. Executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra) echoed the sentiments, saying that the original makers of the show were “making the best of what they had,” but the reason the show is still remembered is because “there was a sense of teamwork and this amazing imagery. And our child brains filled in the gaps.”

Voltron: Legendary Defender won’t require prior knowledge of the original series, however; Dos Santos says that “Our characters are as unfamiliar as a new viewer would be to Voltron.” The characters go to “the equivalent of space camp,” where a senior pilot called Shiro (Keaton) returns after going missing for a year, and tells crazy stories about a super warrior called Voltron, whom he is determined to find.

Voltron: Legendary Defender will be available on Netflix from June 10th, 2016.
