The Lunatics Binge: Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil And Vile Review

Image result for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil posterThis is the one of the Netflix original films that I have been anticipating for a long time now. It did not disappoint. I'm use to seeing Zac Efron do his comedic thing, singing thing and handsome guy stuff but its when Zac is doing is acting thing and pushing himself to the limits of artistic fulfillment that he's at his best. Efron delivers to a point that I'm starting to wonder why his name has not been in constant consideration for an academy award. If the event were to happen this summer he would defiantly be in my top five of best actors of the year.

The tone of the film

I felt that the shear doubt that came about this movie was a character on its own. I grew up hearing the name Ted Bundy many times. His trial was huge in a time before social media and the internet. It was something that gained national attention. Bundy is easily in the discussion of one of the worlds most evil serial killers and the reasons behind it stems to the platform around his trial. The fact that there were so many that supported him throughout and wanted to be involved with him romantically was something never seen at the level this monster gained. A cult following that rivaled some of the viral phenomena in the YouTube era.

He Does Not Seem Like The Type

One of the things about this film is that Zac captured the conversation of privilege and the benefit of the doubt granted to white america, rich america and beautiful america. There were many situation that it seemed like this monster could get away with literal murder because he didn't fit the stereotypical description of a killer. The thought of a mad man and a lunatic does not fit when it comes to clean cut, young, attractive white male. So much attention is granted to those people have been conditioned to fear or be observant of that people like Ted Bundy could always hide in plain sight and kill over and over.

Guilty Until Proven

I have to admit that if I were on the jury of that first arrest in the first act of this film I would have found him not guilty because based on the evidence presented he was clearly not guilty even though he was guilty as hell. The prosecution did not do its job. The frustrated corrupt police did. We have seen it so many times in this country where people have been imprisoned and thrown away, put on death row and even executed to find out years later that they were innocent all along. A lot of times people who have been proven guilty all along have been let go and died without facing the consequences of their action. Its easy to live in a cushy life and say "Oh well, as long as the majority of the guilty are caught vs the innocent that are executed" you can live without thinking much about it saying the ends justify. But tell that to the inmate, framed for a crime no one believes he is innocent of. Tell that to the corrupt cop who ignores evidence that proves a prisoner is not the one because it would tarnish their reputation. Keep a victim in prison because I'd rather them go through hell versus people see that I'm human enough to make a mistake.

Bundy and The Mask

Zac Efron was able to play a man who was convincing himself that he was a victim even when he was seconds away from just murdering someone. He was convinced that he could smile his way from his fate. Charm his way from destiny and live a long life without facing the consequences of his actions. So many times he even had me second guessing myself. The mask he wore was convincing enough to the point where I said in my review that if he were living in a world where twitter was available and DNA was still primitive, he would probably be set free.
