With Don’t Breathe hitting number one two weeks in a row,
what does this mean for the horror genre?
This has been a great year for horror films. Not since the
late 80’s and early 90’s with the Revolution of the campy slasher flix have we
seen this type of motivation. The horror genre is not nor has it ever died.
This is not a resurrection but yet a energization. Now horror is being taken
more seriously by producers and quality of writing and direction have amped up.
Not that we have to have to self Oscar actors in these films, yet we are going
low budget, great execution and pulling in an outstanding haul of gross
profits. The audience over all is happy. In the months before we reach this year’s
Halloween people are enjoying themselves in the genre.
The Conjuring 2,
with a forty million dollar budget was able to bring in over three hundred
million dollars worldwide. The film is set for another spin off and sequel. We’ve
found a new franchise to replace Paranormal Activity. Lights Out
was impactful in many ways. The main way was that it was based on a video short
that was adapted to an original screen play from the same developers. On a
budget of less than five million dollars, Lights Out grossed over a hundred and
twenty.
Upcoming films like When the Bough Breaks and Boo! A Madea
Halloween, set to attract a different type of audience, its apparent, to me, that
horror is all the rave this year and for the years to come. I myself will be
checking out a suggested film by the Queen of Collider, Perry Nemiroff called
Nina Forever. A film about a man who loses his girlfriend, that then sees her reappear
in his bed every time he tries to become intimate with his new girlfriend.
The Blair Witch is returning to theaters and expected to
also hit hard with audiences. This is particularly a great time to be a horror
film fan. Sit back enjoy the scares and prepare yourself for more.
The performances by the cast did some amazing work. This was a well cast movie. I was pretty shocked. I never saw Kate Mara as an action type, I've seen Fantastic Four, now lets forget about that. If she's trying to say she should have been Black Widow in the Marvel movies, this gave us a good argument. This movie followed the same plot points as Species and Splice. You have your science lab in a remote place then your character played by Mara visits. she seems like an HR rep but it shows she's more than that.
Morgan is an enhanced human, quarantined in a similar landscape like the film Ex Machana. This was a great thriller that makes you uncomfortable for the Morgan girl, makes you feel sorry for her. Then things happen to make you say, "What is this thing?" As weird things start to happen. Any time you have scientist playing God, there's no way people will survive. Morgan is stronger smarter, almost a genius. Yet, she's still childish, she looks like a 17-20 year old but she throws tantrums like a 5 year old. A bad combination as always.
This movie makes you see Mara in a whole new light.

Not quite Species, but I see franchise, if this movie makes a certain amount of money. Kate Mara can be something incredible. I'm sitting in my living room. Its 2:13 am CST. I've already begun the episode as Escobar walks to freedom. I'm excited to be bingeing again. This show just like the last few that have premiered is one of Netflix's diamonds in the rough. Once I've completed my binge I'll do a video recap. We will talk spoilers.

This weekend belongs to us.
I see the Escobar as the Tony Soprano of the streaming world. The only difference is Escobar was a real dude. Still, feels appropriate.
I'll keep it on just one character. My top to picks for Doc Brown would be Bill Murray and Jeff Goldblum. I feel that Bill Murray has the comedic chops to bring a new dynamic to the character. Also the fact that he's played a scientist on screen so many times would bring in a proper sense of nostalgia. Murray is a legend, the Icon of comedic Icons. Since we didn't get the proper Ghostbusters, this would be something interesting to look into. No matter who they pick for Marty it won't work as well. It won't feel right. Apples to Apples, Michael J. Fox just has a certain type of charisma that no one has yet matched. It was brilliant to put him in the movie.
Now on to Jeff Goldblum, come on, you know this is brilliant. Close your eyes, visualize Jeff giving that famous, "Life Finds A Way" line in Jurrassic Park. Now imagine him saying "Oh my God, they found me. I don't know how but they found me." OMGoodness! That would be epic. Looking at his performance in Independence Day is more than enough test footage. He's the right amount of twitchy and gives brilliant reads in everything he does.

I haven't seen the movie in a long time but the moment I saw this trailer all I could think of was Fear staring Mark Walberg. I don't have any expectations for this film. It seems to be just like the typical stalker film. I was not really entertained. Seems to a film that should go straight to Netflix. I won't waist more words on this trailer. Other than it seems to have told the whole story the moment the trailer indicated that Brosnan was the hero.

Man of Steel
Suicide Squad
Batman VS Superman: Theatricals Version
The villain was the weakest point of this film. I loved Enchantress, except for the dance scene, her brother on the other hand was a very weak villain. Almost no point to have him until the very end of the film. I wish they would have focused more on smaller missions to have more moments with the Squad to grow as a team.
I felt that the pasting was all over the place. The music unsed in the film was offputing though I loved the songs. It was weird.
The Joker was great but there wasn't enough of him for my taste. Harley was pitch perfect and as was Diablo and Deadshot. It just felt as though the movie as a whole was struggling to find its identity. Comedy/Action

It kept going back and forth. Also the best jokes were in the trailer. It would've been best for them to hold back. Focus on the action and saved one punch line for the debut.
A great moment was The Flash cameo. But even then it was just a mind boggele. Is this film set before Justice League why does The Flash have his suite? I'm sure they'll later tell us that the event is set in the middle of Suicide Squad, which wouldn't make sense because at the lease Flash would have and probably should have helped in the end.
You've seen it and hated them. You've seen it and loved them. Movies have had their ups and downs. Usually we give them a fair shake. Today we're so ready for war, we're ready to defend a genre or particular cinematic universe from harsh criticism before confirming if we agree with the assessment.
We're rooting for a films success but attach people who have a bad reaction to it. Its like telling a person who is sewing a restaurant for food poisoning, saying they don't know what their talking about and the victim is bias for other food places. This before the angry party has even tried the food or the restaurant themselves. It just makes no sense.
Yes critics are bias. The definition is rooted in the opinion of the individual. Your reaction or opinion to a movie is all your own, it belongs to no one else. So by the term, a opinion is always bias. But what the fanboys are saying is that the bias isn't for their own opinion its a preemptive bias that is prejudice against the competition. DC comics/Warner Brothers cinematic universe has its ups and downs. Since the Man of Steel to Batman VS Superman. Suicide Squad was to be the first complete hit. But when mix reviews came in from advance screenings and Rotten Tomatoes gives it an extremely bad score. Fanboys petition the site be such down.
This argument will go nowhere. If DC fanboys want to call bias by pointing a light to their own, this argument will go nowhere. Because I'm sure those guys are going to see Marvel films. I believe Marvel fanboys are seeing the DC films. Its the regular viewer they should be worried about. A small number may be influenced by bad reviews but the majority will more likely be
Michael Steel said it best just a moment ago on MSNBC regarding the election polls but I think it fits. Its the focus on the crowd in front of you (fellow DC fanboys) instead of the crowd we should be watching (regular movie goers) with the crowd that's in front of you. We feel that a movie is great because we loved it along side of our pocket of like minded fellow fanboy friends and we think that represents the whole world. It doesn't. Majority of viewers aren't reading comic books and learning about the Squad for the first time. This was the same risk Marvel had with the Guardians.
What fans are upset about is that Marvel has had time to build trust. Movies that should have been a failure, Ironman, Antman, Guardians, Captain America and Thor, were hits. and the ones that were not so well received, Ironman 2 & Thor 2 still gives Marvel a history of success over "failure". DC is just establishing their universe and both films were met with rocky starts. Not because the film was bad, that is a subjective opinion person-to-person. The problem is that Marvel had the benifit of lower expectations from fans and films like The Dark Knight (Warners) and the Avengers raising fans standards and expectations. Now that DC is starting out after those expectations have been raised they're being looked at to meet the criteria.
The uproar would imply that Marvel film makers are not equally being criticized with the same expectations. Kevin Fiege helped create the standard, so he has learned a great understanding of what the quality of his films should meet. And he does it more often than not. DC has not done this quite as well in my opinion. Though I liked all the movies so far, little things like Superman killed and the Martha/Editing stuff was uproars that DC fanboys complained about more than Marvel, in my opinion. Because they thought the films weren't being handled correctly. But now we're attacking critics. You can't call yourself a fan who's only giving constructive criticism and say that Critics are bias. Rotten Tomatoes algorithm doesn't measure constructive criticism. Okay, relax guys. What we get is what we get. Enjoy the film, if you like it spread the word. Sometimes the critics are judging on all aspects that we're not looking at. Like Lighting and editing. Sometimes us fans just want to see something explode and when it does we give it a 10 out of 10.
We must do and expect better of ourselves.
