House Of Cards Season 6, Did It Need Kevin Spacey?

THE BINGE Review

House of Cards Season 6 Review
Kevin Spacey reasons for leaving the show was necessary. Even though it was necessary, it was still jarring not having him there. The thing that kept taking me out of the story was the being reminded of Francis Underwood’s death. Finding out that he was already gone from the opener was just the beginning of the ever-expanding void. I felt connected to Frank. Not to take anything away from Clare but with everything being put to a fast forward paste to just “get it over with” was doing more harm to the overall story.

Every moment to make Clare, a very powerful character, seem more powerful and that power was not to be questioned or challenged was not done successfully in the way it was done for her and her husband. The way it was done felt like a constant message to the viewer of “we don’t condone what he did” and then later “See, we’re still not okay with people treating others that way” and finally “We’re going to make sure that women are the focal of respect and power”. Which is fine, but it seems that the writers were catering to the wrong audience of the message. Spacey was not accused of harassment of a woman.

The need to turn House of Cards into a message of apology to the people that were offended by what was done in reality was misdirected. Nothing really there for the LGBT community in any of this season. At some parts of the show it catered to the idea that a woman should not be president for the ridiculous reasons most chauvinist give. That being said, it comes up a lot about whether or not the Me-Too movement goes too far since the punishment it dishes out is even across the board but all crimes and its accused are not the same. In the justice system there are different types of murder, homicide, and theft but one reaction to the many cases of sexual harassment and assault.

Over all, the season gave a screeching halt to a once brilliant momentum of a serial tv show. It probably would have been best for it not to be renewed or for Clare to be given the same type of energy and passion into her character. I just feel like every episode, as it got closer to the end was a set up to a day starting off with the words “Let get this over with so we can all go home”.
Reminding us that “he’s gone, he’s not coming back, we’re moving on” was too in your face that it kept me out of the world of House of Cards and I am used to this series taking pulling me in.
